About Us
We bought the Sendmycard.co.uk domain name in 2008 when an IT friend working in London suddenly realised they needed to send a birthday card that same day, and had to spend valuable time finding, buying, writing and posting the card. We thought if there was an easy website he could use, this would have been very useful.
We then said, lets do one called ‘sendmycard’, and checked domain names – www.sendmycard.co.uk was available so we bought it.
When we googled the name, we found an article from around 2004:
Teenage tycoons are turning their bedrooms into boardrooms in a bid to boost their pocket money.
And for five young entrepreneurs in the region, swapping smelly socks for spreadsheets has proved a major deal breaker as their bright business ideas could soon feature in a top TV show.
Channel 4 launched the nationwide Bedroom Britain search five months ago, hunting for youngsters who have been building empires in their homes.
Programme makers with Channel 4 and Media 19 have now made a shortlist of the best business concepts, including five from the North of England.
And the best of the bunch are to star in a new TV series this autumn, and get top tips from industry leaders.
Sean, then 20, hopes to cash in on the show with his website idea www. sendmycard .co.uk . . . an inspired way to remember special occasions and send greetings cards, personalised cards, birthday cards, wedding cards, anniversary cards through an online service.
Browsers will be able pick cards on the site to send to a loved one . . . then Sean will write it and send it.
"I have searched the internet for a similar service but drew a blank, apart from finding numerous e-card websites," said Sean, an e-business student from Stockton, Teesside. Sendmycard seems very original
"Not all e-cards get through computer systems, and they're not very personal. So what I intend to do is have a selection of all the popular card ranges you find in the shops for people to buy if they're busy or don't have access to a card shop.
"It's a bit sneaky because I'll write and post the cards.
"If the recipients don't know your handwriting, though, they'll think you've sent it!
"If you're a bit forgetful you can order birthday and anniversary cards well in advance too. Sendmycard will do anniversary cards as well as birthday cards
"So you'll never get in trouble for missing an important date."
Sean has high hopes for sendmycard and has even arranged to do the third year of his degree through the Open University instead of attending Teesside University in Middlesbrough, giving him ample time to concentrate on the business too.
He added: "My family and friends are all hoping the idea takes off so I can treat them to a holiday or something . . . and I'd love to splash out on an Aston Martin."
Sean and the other four North hopefuls will have to wait until the autumn to find out who'll make it onto the TV show, but organisers have tipped them all for the top regardless of who makes it onto the small screen.
Something must have gone wrong during the following few years or the domain name would not have become available again?
Since buying the name have found a lot of effort has been needed to be put into both stock, stock control, organisation and especially the shopping cart and web page. We did nothing for the first 6 months while we found suppliers of high quality cards that we knew our discerning friends and family would be happy to post. This has resulted in perhaps 90% of our stock being Printed in England. Yes there are nice ones in shops which are cheaper than Printed in England ones, but ‘where are they printed?
Printed in England cards often come with a better quality envelope, and often have the designers name on the back of the card. Some people who receive a card also look at the back of the card; quality cards do have a nicer back as well, and seeing the ‘Printed In England’ speaks for itself. They sometimes have extra pages inside, and we are increasingly ‘hand finishing them’ to make them extra special, for example a mothers card could have a photo of ‘mum’ added to the inside, or the meaning of ‘mums’ name. We even make mothers day cards from ‘the dog – or cat’ and put a picture of the pet on the front of the card, together with paw prints inside the card.
The UK was the first place to make and send birthday cards, similar to the way the UK was the first to make postage stamps – that’s why UK stamps are the only ones in the world that do not say the country on them. (Ref i)
Once we were confident with the stock and quality of cards we then spent several months making the best possible website, and went from a ‘dotnet’ /paypal site on a Microsoft server to a Zencart shopping cart on a Linux server, and then finally to Drupal and UberCart (ref ii) – which we feel gives the professional appearance our site requires.
At SendMyCard.co.uk we will write, personalise and send your birthday card, anniversary card, wedding invitation and other cards (e.g. graduation cards with your ‘cap and photo’ – printed and posted on graduation day if you upload your photo from your mobile on the campus!) to anywhere in the UK.
